I thought this was interesting, a recent blog post by
Jurre Pannekeet at Newzoo examines the viewership of esports and what games the
viewers are playing. There is a staggering amount of people who are watching
esports. It is estimated that through 2017, over 190 million are frequently viewing
esports. Compared to years ago, esports has rapidly increased in viewership,
especially among millennials. What was interesting about their findings was
that while 70% will only watch one particular game, 42% do not play the game
which they are spectating. This means that these games are providing viewers
with the entertainment without having to become fully invested in a game which
may take many hours to become admirable in. These number are indicative of the
world of esports being similar to other major spectator sports where the viewer
do not play the sport, but still enjoy watching the game. With the massive
number of viewers continuing to grow, this bodes well for the health of esports
in the future. Included from Jurre’s post are several helpful infographics
which have been added to this post. Please check out the other great content by
Jurre and show him some love for the great effort he puts into reporting on
esports. His blog is linked below if you do consider checking out his work. I
hope this helps shed some light on the ever-growing popularity of esports and
how it is no longer just a niche things for people who play video games.
